What a 450-year-old printing house taught me about design, innovation, and why great technology lasts.
A few weeks ago I visited the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, Belgium.
I’ve toured plenty of museums over the years—art museums, history museums, science museums—but this one was different. By the end of the visit I realized I hadn’t simply toured an old printing house.
I’d spent two hours walking through what was once one of the most technologically advanced companies in the world.
That realization stayed with me long after I left.
More than a printing press
When most of us think of a printing press, we imagine Gutenberg, movable type, and old books. What I hadn’t appreciated before this visit was how sophisticated the entire operation really was.

Christopher Plantin wasn’t simply printing books. He managed what we’d recognize today as a technology company. His business included:
- product design
- manufacturing
- quality assurance
- supply chain management
- publishing
- intellectual property
- international distribution
The printing press was only one piece of a much larger system.
Walking through the museum, I couldn’t help thinking that many of today’s software companies aren’t all that different. The tools have changed. The business hasn’t.
Fonts were valuable intellectual property
One exhibit fascinated me more than anything else. Plantin purchased typefaces from the greatest designers of his era. Names like:
- Claude Garamont
- Robert Granjon
- Hendrik van den Keere
These weren’t simply artists. They were specialists whose work gave Plantin’s books a distinctive appearance.
But he didn’t stop at purchasing letterforms. He bought the punches and matrices used to manufacture the type itself. Owning those tools meant competitors couldn’t reproduce the same letterforms.
In other words, he wasn’t merely buying fonts. He was buying the technology required to create them.
Standing there looking at hundreds of tiny metal punches, I realized I wasn’t looking at museum pieces. I was looking at sixteenth-century intellectual property. Today companies protect:
- software
- patents
- algorithms
- design systems
Plantin protected typography. Different century. Same business strategy.
The technology hiding in plain sight
One of my favorite discoveries was something we still say every single day.
Uppercase.
Lowercase.
Those terms didn’t originate with computers. They came from the physical drawers used to store type. Capital letters lived in the upper case. Smaller letters lived in the lower case.

Five hundred years later, we’re still using the same terminology—even if most people have no idea where it came from.
The museum is full of examples like this. Many of the concepts we think of as digital actually began as physical solutions developed by printers centuries ago.
Great design survives technology
Perhaps the biggest surprise was realizing how many modern fonts trace their heritage back to this workshop.
Claude Garamont created letterforms during the mid-1500s that continue to influence typography today. Open almost any computer and you’ll likely find multiple Garamond fonts installed.
Even typefaces that aren’t direct descendants were inspired by Renaissance typography established by designers like Garamont and Granjon. Times New Roman, commissioned nearly four centuries later, belongs to that same tradition.
That’s remarkable. Most technology becomes obsolete within years. Great design can remain relevant for centuries.

Digitizing history isn’t as simple as scanning it
Another exhibit explained something I’d never considered.
Modern designers periodically revive historical typefaces for digital use. But they don’t simply trace old letters. They have to understand how printing actually worked.
Ink spread slightly when pressed into paper. Each letter developed a subtle halo around its edges.
That wasn’t a flaw. It was part of how the finished page was meant to look. To faithfully recreate these historic typefaces, designers intentionally account for those physical characteristics.
It’s a reminder that good design isn’t just about copying appearances. It’s about understanding why something looked the way it did in the first place.
Lessons for modern product design
Working in product management and user experience, I found myself making comparisons throughout the tour.
Technology changes constantly. Good design principles rarely do. The best products still rely on:
- thoughtful craftsmanship
- consistency
- usability
- quality
- attention to detail
Plantin understood that typography wasn’t decoration. It was part of the user experience. Readers may never consciously notice a well-designed typeface. But they certainly notice a poorly designed one. That idea hasn’t changed in nearly five centuries.
Why this museum deserves more attention
Antwerp is often overshadowed by places like Amsterdam, Paris, or London. That would be a mistake. The Plantin-Moretus Museum isn’t just for history enthusiasts. It’s for:
- designers
- developers
- writers
- product managers
- publishers
- photographers
- anyone curious about how ideas become products
You’ll leave appreciating not only where modern typography came from, but also how many of today’s technologies are built upon ideas that are hundreds of years old.
Sometimes innovation isn’t about inventing something entirely new. Sometimes it’s about carrying forward ideas that were already brilliant. The tools change. The principles endure.
Final thoughts
Walking out of the museum, I wasn’t thinking about printing presses. I was thinking about software.
About design systems.
About fonts on my laptop.
About user interfaces.
About intellectual property.
About how a company from the 1500s solved problems that modern businesses are still solving today.
That’s what made the experience so memorable. The Plantin-Moretus Museum isn’t simply preserving history. It’s preserving the foundations of technologies we continue to use every single day.
