Spectre iPhone App Review: Is It Worth It for Long Exposure Photography?

Long exposure photography is one of those techniques that can completely change an otherwise ordinary scene.

Moving water becomes smooth and almost glass-like. Waves turn into a soft mist along the shoreline. Waterfalls take on that silky appearance you normally associate with photographs made using a tripod and traditional camera. In the right circumstances, moving people can even disappear from a busy scene.

The iPhone can do some of this on its own. But if you actually want control over the result, I’ve found Spectre to be one of the best photography apps I’ve purchased.

And considering I paid about $5 for it, it’s also one of the easiest photography apps for me to recommend.

Long Exposure on an iPhone

Traditionally, creating a long exposure meant leaving the camera shutter open for an extended period of time.

Instead of capturing a fraction of a second, you might capture several seconds—or even minutes.

Anything stationary remains relatively sharp, while movement accumulates across the exposure.

That’s how photographers create things like:

  • silky waterfalls
  • smooth ocean surfaces
  • streaking clouds
  • automobile light trails
  • nearly empty photographs of otherwise crowded places

Modern smartphones approach this differently. Rather than literally leaving a mechanical shutter open, computational photography can combine information captured across multiple frames to produce a similar effect.

The result is that something that once required a dedicated camera, tripod, filters, and a fair amount of experimentation is now possible with a phone in your pocket.

The iPhone Already Has a Long Exposure Trick

You technically don’t need another app to experiment with long exposure photography on an iPhone.

Apple includes a Long Exposure effect for Live Photos. After capturing a Live Photo, you can open it in Photos, tap the Live option, and select Long Exposure. Apple describes the effect as simulating a DSLR-style long exposure by blurring motion.

It can produce some surprisingly good results. I’ve used it, and for a quick shot it’s certainly worth trying. But there is an important limitation: you’re applying the effect after taking the picture.

You don’t really approach the photograph as a long exposure while you’re capturing it. You don’t decide how long you want the exposure to run or deliberately build the composition around that duration.

The phone makes most of those decisions for you. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want. Other times, it isn’t.

That’s Where Spectre Comes In

Spectre is a dedicated long exposure camera app made by the team behind Halide.

Instead of treating long exposure as an effect applied afterward, Spectre makes it the purpose of the capture.

That distinction sounds small, but in practice it changes the experience considerably. You’re thinking: I want this to be a long exposure. Then you’re composing and capturing the photograph accordingly.

Spectre uses computational photography, machine learning, scene detection, stabilization, and other techniques to simplify a process that can otherwise be fairly complicated. It can also use longer captures to help remove moving crowds, create light trails at night, and smooth moving water.

The app even saves the exposure process as a Live Photo, so you can watch the image develop as movement is accumulated.

But none of those technical details would matter if the pictures weren’t good. That’s ultimately why I still use it.

Where Spectre Really Shines: Water

This is easily my favorite use for the app.

I’ve used Spectre on beaches, waterfalls, bays, piers, rocky shorelines, and other locations where water is constantly moving.

The effect can range from subtle to dramatic. With relatively calm water, it can remove small ripples and create a beautifully reflective surface. With waves, the water takes on an almost mist-like quality. With waterfalls, movement turns into the familiar silky ribbon effect that is normally associated with traditional long exposure photography.

Some of my favorite examples have come from St. Croix and elsewhere in the Caribbean, where turquoise water and dramatic clouds already create a strong photograph.

The long exposure adds something different. It makes the scene feel calmer. Almost timeless. And that’s something a standard snapshot can’t always reproduce.

It’s Particularly Good Around Sunrise and Sunset

Long exposure photography and changing light work exceptionally well together.

Some of my favorite images made with Spectre were captured when there was still color in the sky but the overall scene was beginning to darken.

When the water becomes smooth, reflections become much more pronounced. Cloud movement can become visible. Small waves disappear into gradients of color.

The result often looks closer to what I remember experiencing than what a normal photograph captures.

That’s an interesting aspect of long exposure photography. Technically, the photograph isn’t freezing reality. It’s compressing several moments of reality into one image. Yet sometimes that feels more representative of the experience.

Removing People Can Be Surprisingly Useful

Another clever use of long exposures has nothing to do with water. People move. Buildings don’t.

If you’re photographing a busy tourist destination and people continuously walk through the frame, a sufficiently long exposure can cause those moving subjects to disappear or become much less prominent.

Spectre specifically supports this use case, recommending medium or longer captures for reducing crowds in a scene.

I’ve found that capability particularly interesting when photographing architecture or city environments. It’s not magic. Someone standing still may remain visible. But when people continue moving through the scene, the result can be dramatically cleaner than a conventional photograph.

For travel photography, that’s a useful capability to have.

The Biggest Advantage Is Control

Apple’s built-in Long Exposure effect is convenient precisely because you don’t have to think about much.

Spectre is better when you do want to think about the photograph.

That’s the real difference for me. With the standard Camera app, I’m essentially saying: let’s see what this Live Photo looks like as a long exposure. With Spectre, I’m saying: I’m creating a long exposure.

That changes how I compose the scene. I start looking for movement.

  • Water.
  • Clouds.
  • Traffic.
  • People.
  • Anything where time itself can become part of the photograph.

And once you start thinking that way, you begin seeing photographic opportunities you might otherwise overlook.

You Still Need to Hold the Phone Steady

Computational photography can compensate for a lot. It cannot completely rewrite physics. The more stable the camera, the better the result. Spectre includes automatic stabilization and tripod detection, which certainly help.

I’ve successfully taken plenty of exposures handheld. But when I’m deliberately setting out to create an especially good long exposure, I’ll still look for something solid to brace the iPhone against—or use a tripod when practical.

The subject should move. The camera shouldn’t. That’s still the basic formula.

It’s Not Just an “Effect”

This is probably the reason I like Spectre so much. There are countless camera apps that essentially apply filters. Spectre changes how you take the photograph.

That’s a much more interesting tool. It encourages experimentation. You begin asking questions like:

  • What happens if I make this water completely smooth?
  • What happens if I let those clouds move?
  • Can I photograph this location without the crowd?
  • What would those headlights look like as trails?

That’s closer to traditional photography than simply choosing a filter afterward. The app becomes part of the creative process.

Built-in Camera vs. Spectre

For casual photography, Apple’s solution may be all you need. If you’ve never tried it, start there. Take a Live Photo of moving water and apply the Long Exposure effect afterward. It’s remarkably easy, and it costs nothing.

But if you find yourself enjoying the technique, Spectre gives you a much more intentional way to approach it. I think of the two options this way:

  • Great for experimentation
  • Already built into the iPhone
  • Extremely easy
  • Long Exposure is applied afterward
  • Very little creative control

Spectre

  • Built specifically around long exposures
  • Lets you approach the shot intentionally
  • Useful for smoothing water
  • Useful for light trails
  • Can help remove moving crowds
  • Includes computational stabilization and scene detection
  • Produces Live Photos that preserve the exposure process

Neither makes the other unnecessary. They’re simply designed for different levels of involvement.

Is Spectre Worth It?

For me, absolutely. I’ve spent far more than $5 on photography accessories that have made far less difference to my photography.

Spectre isn’t something I use every day. That’s actually part of why I like it. It’s a specialized tool.

When I see a waterfall, an interesting shoreline, a sunset over calm water, or a scene with movement that I want to interpret differently, I know exactly which app to open.

And the images I’ve captured with it are enough to justify the purchase many times over.

A Different Kind of iPhone Photography

One of the reasons I’ve continued enjoying iPhone photography is that computational photography opens up techniques that would traditionally require considerably more equipment.

That doesn’t mean an iPhone replaces a dedicated camera. It doesn’t. But sometimes the most interesting camera isn’t the one with the largest sensor. It’s the one that lets you create something you otherwise wouldn’t have attempted.

Spectre does that. It turns long exposure photography from something that feels technical and somewhat intimidating into something you can experiment with almost anywhere.

And after using it on beaches, waterfalls, city scenes, and landscapes over the years, it’s become one of those rare apps that has stayed on my iPhone.

For about the price of a cup of coffee, that’s pretty easy to recommend.
